2015-16 Utah Jazz: The View From Section 3 – Introduction

Jazz Nation—I have some super exciting news. I recently joined the ranks of the Utah Jazz season ticket holders for 2015-16!

This is something I’ve wanted to do for years and finally did. This is the first in what will be a series of posts that I’m calling The View From Section 3. My intention is to chronicle my first season of being a Jazz season ticket holder, both to help me remember this upcoming season forever and to share my excitement for the Utah Jazz with everyone.

My intention is NOT to gloat, brag, or in any way imply that I’m a better Jazz fan than anyone else. (Editor’s Note: You’re a better man than I.)

With that being said, several weeks ago my wife and I were talking about bucket list items and, of course, one that I mentioned was getting Jazz season tickets. This was no surprise to my wife—over the course of eight-plus years she has come to grasp the intensity of my Jazz fandom. What came as a surprise to me was when my wife asked me, “Why don’t you get season tickets for next year?”

It is noteworthy that a couple of weeks before this conversation, I got to attend an event for the season ticket holders who were quick to renew, courtesy of my insurance agent, who fell in to this category. The event was a BBQ at EnergySolutions Arena along with an opportunity to meet the players and coaches, take pictures, get autographs and play games. Here’s one picture of my son and I with Derrick Favors and Trevor Booker:

You can’t tell from the picture, but that is a Jazz polo shirt I was wearing. My son and I had so much fun that I seriously started thinking about how great it would be to buy season tickets.

I spent a good couple of days thinking about my wife’s question. Our three children are pretty young (six, four and two) and don’t always have the greatest attention span. Since we only ever considered getting two season tickets, regardless of who went, we would have less time to all spend together as a family. Sometimes our various schedules are already kind of crazy and going to a bunch of Jazz games wouldn’t make things less complicated.

Then there was also the obvious financial cost. It wasn’t really an issue in the sense that we couldn’t afford season tickets, but as an accountant, I always like to consider the opportunity costs of spending money on one thing versus another.

With some of these questions in mind, I took all three of the kids (my wife was working) to the Select-A-Seat Open House at the ESA on April 6th. I met with a season ticket rep and we discussed some of the available seats, including cost and payment options. A few days later, following more thinking (I’m a pretty deliberate person) and discussions with my wife, we decided to go for it.

Now, all I can say is that the 2015-16 season can’t get here soon enough. I took to Twitter to ask other season ticket holders about what was exciting for them in their first season. While I only heard back from one person, she gave me a couple of great responses:

I also came across a couple of tweets from other new season ticket holders:

Jazz Fever is spreading my friends! I’m going to have a lot of fun providing updates on this adventure of following the 2015-16 Utah Jazz live and in person, and I hope you all enjoy following along. My goal is get all of you drinking the Jazz Kool-Aid by the end of the 2015-16 season if you aren’t already. Go Jazz!
