NBA Free Agency: Ryan Kelly on Utah Jazz radar?

The Utah Jazz have been rumored to want to sign a “stretch four” type player. Los Angeles Lakers forward, Ryan Kelly, is reportedly a target of the Jazz’s. Reported by Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Kelly is a big bodied power forward. Kelly stands at 6’11″, and weighs in at around 230 pounds. He played last season with the Lakers and averaged 8.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game in 22.2 minutes per game off the bench.

Kelly is exactly what people would call a “stretch four” type player. He is a big body that can bang down low, but can also step back and hit the outside shot. He shot the ball well for a big man with the Lakers, averaging 33.8% from beyond the three point line.

The knock on Kelly is his youth. The Jazz have been rumored to wanting to sign a “stretch four” type player, but they have also said that they want to sign a veteran player. Kelly only fits one of those two scenarios. Kelly would not be the type of player who will come in and provide a veteran leadership role.

Regardless of his age, Kelly can shoot the ball, and because that is exactly what the Jazz are looking for in a free agent big man, it is obvious why the Jazz would be showing interest in Kelly.

Why would they if they already have a guy called Erik Murphy who has very similar skill set?

    • Cody Powers

The Jazz haven’t picked up the 2nd year option on Murphy’s contract. It’s still not a guarantee that he will be in a Jazz uniform next season.
