Few Thoughts on 1984 Draft and 2014 Draft

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to watch the NBAtv 1984 draft special.  4 of the greatest 25 players of all time were drafted in that draft (Hakeem Olajawon, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, John Stockton).

What a draft!

This latest draft has had the most appeal for potential superstars since the 2003 draft with Lebron James.  Just wanted to compare Lebron’s draft to Jordan’s for a second.  Lebron James is one of the greatest 25 to have ever played the game and I don’t think people will question that.  Dwayne Wade is arguably up there as well as he has 3 championships to his name and has been of the greatest shooting guards of all time.  Although Wade is very good I place him just outside the greatest 25 of all time, so top 50 suits him.  Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh have been paid well, but I don’t think anybody is putting those two in the top 50 any time soon.

1984  >>>>> 2003 and I doubt anybody will argue against that.  How incredible was that draft?  To have the best shooting guard ever to play the game, with a top 5 center to ever play the game, a top 5 power forward to ever play the game and a top 2 point guard to ever play the game is just insane!

So how will 2014 compare?  If it is anywhere near Lebrons draft it will be good, but does it have the potential to be better?  Way too early to tell but the hype is definitely up there for this draft to make a splash.  If Jabari, Wiggins, Exum, Embiid all become superstars then I’m guessing this will easily fall into the second best draft class ever.  Follow that up with all star potentials and this class is special.  That’s just it though, they have to live up to hype and let’s face it almost nothing lives up to the hype.
