NBA Draft: Does Mitch McGary have a first round promise?

Nearly 48 hours until the start of the 2014 NBA Draft, there are plenty of rumors swirling around about what teams will do. As we get closer to Thursday, we will start hearing new rumors about possibilities of players earning “promises” from teams.

According to ESPN Insider Chad Ford, the first person he has reported that he believes Mitch McGary might be one of those players who could have a promise already.

The Jazz, as Ford said, could be a team that is in that mix. However, I don’t really see that happening. The Jazz could possibly select a guy like Noah Vonleh, Julius Randle, or Aaron Gordon with their fifth overall pick. If they do that, while already having Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, Rudy Gobert, and even Jeremy Evans on the roster, there really isn’t a lot of room to add McGary unless a trade were to happen and the Jazz needed front court depth.

Soon after the two previous tweets were sent out, Ford followed up by saying that the sources he had talked to said that the team promising McGary a pick was the Charlotte Hornets.

McGary was regarded as a lottery bound talent last year after his great run with Jazz point guard Trey Burke, that led Michigan to the National Championship game. After deciding to go back to Michigan for another year, having back surgery, and testing positive for marijuana, his draft stock has slipped. However, McGary could be a player that could be a huge spark off the bench in the future, providing that his back stays healthy.
