It all comes down to tonight! The last night of the regular season, and all the bottom of the barrel teams in the NBA are in action tonight. Those teams in lottery position have a lot on the line. There are many different scenarios that could still affect teams, like the Jazz.
Currently, the Utah Jazz are one game back of the Orlando Magic for the third worst record in the league. The Jazz also are looking the opposite way as well, as they are only one game ahead of the Boston Celtics for the fourth worst record in the league. Things could either go really well, go really south, or stay put tonight for the Jazz when it comes to the lottery.
The Jazz, in the fourth spot, currently hold an 11.9% chance of landing the top spot in the NBA Draft, and a 37.8% chance of landing in the top three. If the Jazz were to win tonight against the Minnesota Timberwolves, then the Celtics lose to the Washington Wizards at home, the two teams would be tied for fourth. With the flip of a coin, the Celtics could jump the Jazz and the Jazz could be headed to the lottery sitting with the fifth worst record’s chances at landing a top three pick. The 37.8% chance the Jazz had would then drop to 29.1%. This is the worst case scenario.
The Magic are also in action tonight, and only a game ahead of the Jazz, there is still a chance the Jazz could catch them too. The Magic are home tonight hosting the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers locked up the East’s overall number one seed for the playoffs when the Miami Heat lost to the Wizards on Monday night. Having the number one seed locked up, the Pacers could be looking to rest the majority of their players tonight in a game that is essentially meaningless to them. If this is to happen, the Magic could be looking at a great chance to win the game. If they were to win, and the Jazz were to lose, the two teams would then be tied for the third worst record in the league. With the flip of a coin, the Jazz could possibly jump the Magic and head to the lottery with the third worst record’s chances at landing a top three pick. The 37.8% chance the Jazz had would increase to 46.9%. This is the best case scenario.
As much attention as mainly Jazz fans will have on those two games tonight, the Jazz will be focused on their own game. The Jazz will be looking to wrap up the season against the Timberwolves, and if you are looking for a preview of tonight’s matchup, you can find that here with our Game Preview!
The best thing for Jazz fans at this point is to see the Jazz drop the final game of the season. It at least gives them a chance. If Orlando somehow wins that game against the Pacers, the Jazz are in great position. If the Jazz go into the lottery with the third worst record’s odds, there is a possibility that they get jumped. However, sitting in third and getting jumped, they may only drop to fourth in the draft.
There is many possibilities that can happen surrounding the Jazz’s draft pick. There is not a lot that us as fans can do to try and make the ping pong balls fall in our favor, but we won’t have to wait long to find out how things are going to go for us. I’m not one to cheer for a Jazz loss, but tonight, with lottery implications all around the league, I might be making an exception tonight.
