Trey Burke to play in Rising Stars Challenge

It was something that was very much expected by not only Jazz Nation, but by most of the NBA that Trey Burke would get a nod to participate at All-Star weekend. On Thursday, it became official.

Burke was selected to participate in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge set to take place at All-Star weekend in New Orleans. Burke, the 9th pick in the 2013 NBA draft, was 1 of only 2 players who were drafted in the top 10 of the draft to receive an invitation.

Burke will be joined by fellow rookies Victor Oladipo (Magic), Michael Carter-Williams (76ers), Steven Adams (Thunder), Pero Antic (Hawks), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks),  fellow Michigan alumn Tim Hardaway Jr. (Knicks), Kelly Olynyk (Celtics), and Mason Plumlee (Nets).

Second year players getting the nod to compete in the game were headlined by the reigning Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard (Trailblazers), Anthony Davis (Pelicans), Harrison Barnes (Warriors), Bradley Beal (Wizards), Andre Drummond (Pistons), Terrence Jones (Rockets), Jared Sullinger (Celtics), Jonas Valanciunas (Raptors), and Dion Waters (Cavaliers).

The way the game works is this, the teams will be drafted, rookies and sophomores can be on the same team, and after the teams are drafted fans can go online at NBA.com to vote for who they think should be in the starting lineups.

Trey joins fellow and former Jazzmen Bryon Russell, Andrei Kirilenko, Deron Williams, Paul Millsap, Ronnie Brewer, Derrick Favors, and Gordon Hayward as members of the Jazz who have represented the team in the game.

Trey spoke with the media Thursday and said that, “it’s an honor to be chosen to the Rising Stars Challenge and to be able to represent the Jazz during All-Star weekend. The coaching staff and my teammates here in Utah have put me in a position to earn this recognition. I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to playing in the game. ”

Trey and the rest of the participants will play the game on February 14th and 7:00 pm Eastern Time. You can catch the game and the rest of the action from All-Star weekend on TNT.
