Feb 20th, the last day to trade players. This year should be interesting as next years draft class is insanely good. The Jazz are in a very interesting spot as they have many options in front of them.
The 3 Expiring Contracts
The three guys the Jazz received from the Golden State Warriors all have expiring contracts that could be shipped off for many reasons. Richard Jefferson has proven that he can still play at a very high level and might be attractive to a title contending team, as will Brandon Rush. Biedrins as well as the other two could be included in a cap saving trade for the future.
The Jazz would be able to take on a bigger contract if they feel it’s worth it while giving up one of these three guys based on the amount they make. The money has to match from each team making it attractive to other teams that aren’t happy with what they have.
As we all know the Jazz have young guys with lots of potential that can be an attractive piece in any trade talk. For example if the Jazz were not planning on keeping Hayward they could trade him at the deadline (like Deron Williams) and get pieces instead of getting nothing at the end of the year. The Jazz also could ship a pick and Burks or Kanter for a better projected pick if they really think this draft is worth giving up a young guy for.
I don’t expect the Jazz to do a blockbuster deal but if they wanted to they definitely have the assets this year. I don’t see Burke or Favors going anywhere but if the Jazz wanted to ship them with say the top pick from this year they could attract a star like player from a team wanting to go in another direction.
Either way the trade deadline is always a lot of talk with very little action so don’t be surprised if every Jazz player is thrown out in a trade rumor. The most likely to be traded is Richard Jefferson and I don’t expect him here after the deadline.
