The Utah Jazz Should Draft Embiid or Randle

After last night and the play of the young guys this year it is clear that Trey, Alec, Hayward and Favors are all legit starters meaning the Jazz are missing one piece.   Although Kanter should be that guy, right now he is not that guy.  Burks and Hayward compliment each other very nicely which leads me to believe the Jazz don’t need another wing.

I understand that getting Jabari or Wiggins is the “cool” thing.  After watching the Jazz lately though if they want to be a contender in the next few years they need that one guy that will compliment the other guys.  Jabari would be great and obviously if the Jazz have the chance I don’t see them passing on him.  Jazz fans need to realize though that the chances of getting Jabari are slim.  GM’s have recently said that Jabari and Embiid will go 1 and 2 with Wiggins having a “0% chance of passing either of them.”

With the Bucks being the worst team by far in the NBA, even if the Jazz were to tank I don’t see them being worse than the Bucks or even the Magic.  That means most likely the Jazz will not be getting a top 2 pick unless they win the lottery.  The consensus top 5 picks will be Jabari, Wiggins, Embiid, Randle and Exum.  I doubt the Jazz go the Exum route because Exum wants to play the point.  If the Jazz go with a wing then they plan on bringing Burks off the bench long term and they will probably lose him after his contract ends.  If Jabari is available I believe he will be an upgrade at one of the wings even with Hayward and Burks improving greatly.  The one thing to also consider is if Jabari can play the stretch 4 like Marvin does.  If so that would be an added benefit.

In my mind, Jabari will be gone by the time the Jazz draft which means hopefully Embiid or Randle is available.  My thinking is Wiggins would not be worth taking over Embiid and Randle if you’re the Jazz based on need.  If Embiid is available I believe you should draft him after Jabari.  A lineup of Burke, Burks, Hayward, Favors and Embiid in a couple years will be on a level of an OKC and will compete in the West.  The Jazz will have the cash to bring in a bench as well and could definitely surprise people as soon as next year.

Randle would also compliment Favors nicely allowing Favors to focus on defense with him being a very capable fifth option on offense.  My point to all this is simple:  don’t get your hopes up if the Jazz don’t get Jabari because Embiid and even Randle could be much much better.
