The Memphis Grizzlies have lost 9 of their last 11 games at home, including 3 straight. They are trying to avoid a 4th straight home loss, which would tie them for the longest home losing streak. The Jazz are 2-2 on their current 5 game road trip. Since starting the season losing 9 straight road games, the Jazz have won 5 of their last 8 on the road. They look to finish off the road trip with a winning record, which how many times have we been able to say that?
Both teams are coming off wins on the road on Saturday. Memphis traveled to New York and beat the Knicks 95-87. The Jazz were down in Charlotte taking on Big Al and the Bobcats. The Jazz pulled out a gutty victory, 88-85.
Memphis has won 4 out of their last 5 meetings against the Jazz.
Key Matchup : Trey Burke vs Mike Conley Jr.
Conley is one of the most underrated point guards in the NBA. He is very good and will give Trey all he can handle tonight. This matchup, though, is about how well Trey can play tonight, because Trey makes all the difference.
On the current 5 game road trip the Jazz record stands at 2 wins and 2 losses. In the 2 wins, Trey has combined to score 50 points and hit 8 three pointers. In the Jazz’s 2 losses, he has a combined 5 points and only 1 three pointer. On the season, when Trey scores 20 points or more, the Jazz are 4-1.
Trey has the ability to get up and score on any given night, but he needs to have consistency, which he hasn’t had on this road trip. He scored 3 points at the Heat, 30 points at the Magic, 2 points at the Hawks, and 20 points against the Bobcats. If he keeps with the pattern he has been on, tonight’s game could be rough.
I can’t really remember the last time the Jazz had a winning record on the road. It seems like it has been forever. The Jazz have an opportunity tonight to do something that we didn’t really think was possible with this team, which is win the majority of their road games on a 5 game trip. Most the time when the Jazz go on a road trip, we are used to seeing them come home 0-5 or 1-4.
Memphis is a very good defensive team. However, they are without Marc Gasol and Tayshaun Prince due to knee injuries still. Tony Allen could frustrate Gordon Hayward with his defense. Hayward needs to make sure he doesn’t get frustrated in this matchup.
I think that with the way the Jazz have been playing, they have a really good shot at winning this game. Memphis is not at full strength and their bench is not very deep. I think the Jazz will finish off the road trip with a victory, and I will take a 3-2 road trip for the Jazz any day!
