Alec Burks Is Becoming the Real Deal

Last night Alec Burks put up stats that no other Jazz player has this season and it was against the defending NBA Champion Miami Heat.  Alec had 31 points on 12-17 shooting, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 4 steals.  On a court with Lebron James and Dwayne Wade, Alec was the standout performer.  Even more impressive was Alec kept the Jazz in the game with an even plus minus on the night in 34 minutes, where Trey and Gordon were -25 and -32 on the court.

In December Alec is shooting 50% from the field and averaging 16.8 points a game.  He is also averaging 47.8% from the three point line which is impressive for a guy that was knocked for not being a shooter.  In the 28.6 minutes a game that he is averaging, Alec has been a big reason why the Jazz are playing better as of late.  Rumor has it that Dennis Lindsey told Alec just to go strong to the hoop and let the game come to him.  Even more rumors has it that the coaching staff have told Alec to forget about the playbook and just make things happen as he knows how to.

In the last 9 games Alec really has had only 2 sub par games (San Antonio, @ Denver).  If you take both of those games out then Alec is averaging 19.7 points, 3.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds, shooting 58% from the field, 60% from 3 and 78% from the line.  Those numbers are 6th man of the year numbers and even borderline all-star numbers.

Alec averages 3.7 points a game off drives to the basket which is good for 17th in the NBA.  He also is shooting 42.9% from catch and shoot shots which is in the top 50 in the NBA.

Demar Derozan is someone I’ve always compared Burks to and now that Derozan is having a great season I’d love Burks to be what Derozan is for Toronto.  Per 36 this year their stats are almost identical, but in December alone Alec is putting on a clinic.  If Alec can continue the success he is having then I believe the Jazz are going to have a really tough decision in the next year as the Jazz have been looking at a wing player to play opposite of Hayward that can produce.  If that guy is Burks then drafting Randle over Parker or Wiggins is a definite possibility (if the Jazz have a choice) to upgrade the current starting 5.

Either way it’s great to see what Alec has been able to do as of late and the #freeAlecBurks people are starting to look a lot better than they did the past 2 years.
