The Real Competition for the Utah Jazz

Alright so since the Jazz this year seem like they might be the worst team in NBA history (9-72 Sixers currently hold that mark), I though it would be nice to check out the Jazz’s real competition.  What other teams do the Jazz really have to compete with for a top 2-4 pick.  The Jazz are on pace right now to set an NBA worst 6-76 record which is unthinkable.  The thing we have to remember is the Jazz still play in the altitude another 35 times and that is bound to bring some wins.  Also the Jazz have played arguably the hardest schedule up to this point and January and February look like a cake walk compared to November and December.

If you look at the schedule at the bottom of the page a couple things stand out.  First the West is ridiculously good and the Jazz really have no way of catching anyone in the West.  At the first of the season you could argue that the Jazz might be better than the Kings and the Suns and possibly the Lakers without Kobe.  Now the only team that the Jazz w have a chance at catching is the Kings and I still think the Jazz will have to win above 25 games to do that.

The second thing I noticed is the East is awful!  The Jazz, even as bad as they are, could still end up above 5-7 teams in the East.  That most likely means that Julius Randle, Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins and Dante Exum could all end up in the East.  The Nets and Knicks shouldn’t be as bad as they are and the Celtics and Sixers shouldn’t be as good as they are.  I fully expect the bottom three teams to be Milwaukee, Orlando and Boston in the East with the Sixers and Wizards close behind (or ahead depending which way you look at it).

According to predictionmachine.com the Jazz will have 21 wins at the end of the season and the Bucks will have 24.  If this is the case the Jazz will be loving life as they will be guaranteed one of those four players no matter how the lotto balls fall.  To fall out of the bottom three the Jazz would have to win 31-32 games.  I think this number will drop to about 27-28 because of the massive tanking that will happen starting after the all-start break by every team that isn’t in playoff contention.

So Jazz fans if you want to chewer for a team this year, cheer for the Bucks and the Celtics because every time they win the Jazz get closer to having the superstar they want.
