Derrick $#%&!@ Favors

As I sat and watched what was by far the best game the Jazz have played up to this point.  I realized something.. Derrick Favors is going to be a star in this league.  We’ve all had, as fans, those moments where we cringe when Favors gets the ball on offense and he just looks lost on what to do.  Last night however was every good move I’ve seen Derrick do, in one full game of play.

24 points on 10-17 shooting, 17 rebounds and 3 assists in 36 minutes.

Derrick has played over 26 minutes in 3 preseason games so far and in every one of those three he had a double-double.  In fact in those three games he’s averaged 14.6 points on 54% shooting (17-32) , 15.6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block in 32 minutes a game.

If these stats are anywhere near what Favors averages in the regular season the Jazz will be looking at an all-star in February.  Last year the league leader in rebounds was Dwight Howard with 12.4 rebounds a game.  In fact for his career he’s averaged 18 and 12 and he’s a Hall of Fame certainty according to most experts.  So if this is the first season that Favors averages over 30 minutes and he averages what Dwight has been…. okay jumping ahead too far, but you get the point.

The biggest deterrent to Favors averaging a double-double is getting into foul trouble.  So far in the preseason we haven’t had too worry about that, but when he is averaging 36 minutes a night that will come into play a lot.  Especially if teams are smart they will attack Favors til they build up a couple of fouls on him.

All I’ve thought about since last night is that left handed hook push shot that he took twice last night and both were pretty.  Hopefully Favors can make this a consistent move, because it is near impossible to stop.  I know it’s only preseason, but any doubters on if Favors is worth the 4 year $49 million dollar extension are getting their questions answered quickly.  Keep it up D Fav!
