First Interview: Richard Jefferson

After the trade with the Golden State Warriors, I’ve considered Brandon Rush the only legitimate piece that might continue with the Jazz, but the other two parts as just bench pieces and to fill up a roster spot.  After the interview with Richard Jefferson I’ve completely changed my mind.

Richard Jefferson is probably the most intelligent interview I’ve ever heard.  Most the time I either can’t understand the player (Enes Kanter) or they answer the question the same way (Derrick Favors).  RJ was different and I’m very happy he is on our team.  Richard talked about that he expects to play more than the 4 minutes a game than he did the last two years with the Warriors, but less obviously than his days in San Antonio and New Jersey.

He is a very smart mentor and they talked a lot about how he had to take over the team in New Jersey in year 4 just like Gordon Hayward is about to do.  He will be a huge influence on Hayward and knows what is coming for him.  “It’s a different beast” he calls it (talking about Hayward being the guy).  He says to put up 20 a night when teams are scheming for you is something that Hayward will struggle with but he’ll learn and get much better because of it.  If Jefferson stays with the Jazz I could see him have a future in coaching at some point in the next few years.

Jefferson will be competing for time at the two and three with Rush, Clark and Marvin off the bench.  The audio link should be posted on 1280 the Zone later today.  Welcome to Utah Richard Jefferson and P&B wishes you the best!
