As Cody Powers on the Purple and Blues staff wrote about last month Trey Burke is the favorite to win rookie of the year honors according to most sports books. According to the odds Oladipo, Porter and McCollum have the best chance along with Burke to win the award. I’m not a huge fan of rookie of the year because in many circumstances the best guy from that draft plays too little to win it and somebody that got lucky and fell into a good situation ends up winning the award.
Based on what I watched in college I believe McCollum to be the guy to beat as he fills up a stat sheet very well. Oladipo will be solid and same with Porter but in my opinion it will come down to three guys at the end: Trey Burke, CJ McCollum and Michael Carter-Williams.
The reason I believe this to be the case is these guys will have the ball in their hands more than the other players. Ben McLemore is on a team that doesn’t know how to pass and Anthony Bennett is on a team that has a log jam all of a sudden at the big positions. Alex Len, Cody Zeller and Kelly Olynyk definitely have a shot at it but again I don’t think they will have the ball in their hands enough to win the award.
Burke obviously is close to the favorite for a reason and that is he will start right away along with Carter-Williams in Philly. It gives both these guys a head start in the race and if either performs exceptionally well right out of the gate it will be hard for other players to catch up just like last year with Damian Lillard. So even though most boards have 16 players and a field choice for rookie of the year Jazz fans only really have to worry about two guys this upcoming year and honestly as long as Burke doesn’t perform like he did in summer league and starts all season it will be very difficult to lose the award to anyone. In other words its Burke’s to lose.
