Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors, along with 26 other bright young players, are in Las Vegas this week for USA basketball camp with Coack K and other coaches. They will have closed practices Monday through Wednesday and the play on NBATV at 7 pm Mountain Standard Time Thursday night the 25th.
Last year these 2 were invited and competed against the superstars of the NBA which taught them that they need to work harder. Favors said of the experience
Basically, it was that hard to score against them. It was an eye-opener, let you know that you are good but there are people out there that are way better and you need to work more.
Hayward and Favors will be competing for open spots for the FIBA Basketball World Cup and also for the Olympics in 2016. This week is the time to show that they can compete with the best at their position. Hayward will be up against players like Paul George (yes Jazz fans the guy many of you think the Jazz should’ve taken instead of Hayward, but I disagree), Chandler Parsons and Klay Thompson.
Favors on the other hand will be competing against bigs such as DeMarcus Cousins, Greg Monroe, Larry Sanders and Anthony Davis.
If I had to guess which two out of each of those groups made it, Hayward would definitely be in and Favors would have to really step up to take over Cousins, Davis or Monroe. I believe with the conditioning that Favors has been going through though with Malone that he definitely will have the potential to do just that.
Either way to have 2 Jazz young guys be considered the best of the up and coming is a remarkable accomplishment. Now hopefully they can further that cause and make it into the top 12 that make the Olympics in 2016, something Malone knows much about.
