Trey Burke: The Numbers Game

Trey Burke’s summer league performance was by all accounts underwhelming, or bad or poor whatever you want to call it.  He shot very poor 20 something percent from the field, this is bad.  Does this worry me? absolutely not, if you watched any of his games from college you know he can shoot.  What bothers me the most is when people say he is slow (many media members) or just not athletic enough to cut it in the NBA.  The fact is that everybody in the NBA is an athlete and so it is not physical skills alone that sets people apart in the NBA, its the intangibles the things that cannot be measured.  So for fun lets look at a few of the top PG’s in the NBA right now and see how their measurable compare with Trey’s.

A big thanks to Draftexpress for the following information:

(Trey Burke is Faster than Chris Paul???? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttt?) yep the numbers don’t lie.

Out of all of these PG’s Trey Burke had the fastest 3/4 Court Sprint. So I guess we can say he is Fast.  He weighs more than Chris Paul, is taller than Chris, has a longer wing span than Chris and a faster 3/4 court spring.  Chris does have a better max vert by 1.5 inches.

Trey Compares Favorably to all of these guys.  Trey’s problem right now is he was noticeably weaker than all of these guys coming out of college. the good news is by getting world class trainers he can easily get stronger.  I think this was one of his big problems in the Summer League, they were running two a day practices with scrimmage games and people that are stronger and in better shape are obviously going to be able to handle the work load better.

Trey needs to get in shape and get stronger, and I’m pretty sure he will.  This guy wants to show the Jazz and the NBA that he belongs and I’m betting he will put the work in to do so.  Remember Trey ran an offense at Michigan and was dang good at it, he thrives in structure he is not a street baller which basically is how the Summer League games looked.  When he can get settled and be with players that know the offense and have structure he will prosper and the sky is the limit, it just depends if he wants it or not.  And Physical tools will not be the issue if he doesn’t get there.
