Where would Alec Burks go if he was in this years draft?

Draft day is closing in and there are tons of rumors on who the Jazz will take or if the Jazz will move up or down.  There are rumors about Jimmer that Kings are looking to move him for a first round pick and the Jazz are tied to the rumor as well.  In all the rumors about the Jazz moving up the one name that keeps popping up in trades is Alec Burks.  The Jazz aren’t going to trade Hayward, Favors or Kanter and with the rest of the last years roster being free agents, one of the few trade chips the Jazz have is Burks.  The problem I have with all of these rumors is how weak this draft is.  What player would we really get in return for Burks if we do make a trade?  Is that player going to be an upgrade from Burks?

To answer these questions I decided to throw Burks into this draft to see where I believe he would be drafted.  Here’s my ranking of SG in this years draft.

1. Victor Oladipo 6’4″ 213 lbs. 21 yrs old.

2. Ben McLemore 6’5″ 189 lbs. 20 yrs old.

3. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope 6’6″ 204 lbs. 20 yrs old.

I’m not going to go any deeper than those guys because Burks will fit in here.  Coming out of Colorado Burks stock was fairly high.  The draft Burks was a part of was a little bit better than this draft in my opinion but not by much.  So where does he fit in?  Honestly Burks probably wouldn’t go above Oladipo because a bunch of NBA guys think Oladipo is the best overall player in the entire draft.  I’m not super high on Ben McLemore, I think he has a long ways to go before he can contribute to an NBA team.  That being said Ben still may go above Burks in this draft if  Burks was coming out of college and we knew nothing about him.  So to be fair I would insert Burks as the number 3 player on this list above Caldwell-Pope.

The beauty of all of this is that we’ve seen Burks play in the NBA.  Jazz fans know that Burks can compete and has a no fear attitude when he plays on the floor.  We haven’t seen what Burks can do when given starter minutes and he may have the opportunity to do that this season for the Jazz.  Ben McLemore is projected to go 5th in the draft to Phoenix according to Chad Ford on ESPN.com.  Knowing what I know about Alec Burks today I would take what I’ve seen out of Alec compared to the questions I have about what Ben McLemore could be.  So I value Alec Burks as a top 5 pick in this years draft.  The only player that I would be okay with us going after and trading Burks for is Oladipo and even then I would be sad to see Burks leave.

We don’t know what these players will be once they get on the floor in the NBA next season.  I know that I want to see how good Alec can be if given the time for the Jazz and believe he might get that opportunity this season.  Keep the core 4 in tact and see what they’re able to do next season.  In my opinion Burks is worth more than what the Jazz can get by trading up in this years draft.
