Derrick Favors Undervalued and Under Appreciated

Bill Simmons compared Derrick Favors across the board to Kenneth “the manimal” Faried.  In fact, Faried and Favors averaged the same points and boards (11.5 pts and 9.2 rpg) with  in the exact same amount of minutes (26.4).  Then add in defense and Favors averaged a full block more a game.

A year ago Corbin finally inserted Favors into the starting lineup against the Spurs in the playoffs and Favors played exceptionally well.  Fast forward six months and Favors was placed back on the bench in favor of Millsap.  Through the majority of 82 games Favors came off the bench and played limited minutes as Corbin felt like Millsap deserved the time.  The Jazz missed the playoffs and didn’t bring “the core four” along as much as most people would have wanted, especially Favors.  With the Jazz being able to extend Favors this off-season up until October, not sure what the Jazz do or what Favors decides.

All I know is whatever Dwight Howard gets as a contract then Favors probably deserves the same (will get less but deserves the same).  In 40 minutes of play Dwight averages 19 points  and Favors 17.  Favors averages 12.6 rebounds and Howard averages 13.  Favors actually beats Dwight in steals, blocks, free throw percentage and can actually hit a jumper better than Dwight.  This is Dwight Howard we are talking about!?  Favors and Dwight are similar in so may ways but ego.  Yes Dwight alone won’t produce a championship contending team and neither will Favors but they are huge pieces in a winning teams build.

If I’m Favors I go to management and make sure I’m their guy and will be starting and playing 36-40 a night before I’d sign any type of extension.  The Jazz (mainly Corbin have really pushed back Favors progression and maybe it was to sign Favors to a less than max contract, but either way Derrick Favors to stay in Utah NEEDS to be guaranteed a starting job and time on the floor cause he has earned it.  And plus the Jazz won’t win without him.
