Rumors, rumors and more rumors. That’s what fans keep hearing concerning Paul Millsap, Big Al and even Alec Burks. The trade deadline is not until February 21st but that doesn’t stop the rumors from flying. Most trades don’t happen until usually the week of or even up to the last minute before the trade deadline. Does that mean fans should ignore the rumors that are being tossed around? Yes and no.
The Jazz have never been a team to let a rumor leak, therefore if a rumor pops up you can most likely disregard the validity of the rumor. However; that being said, I personally think the Jazz make a move earlier than later. The Jazz will definitely be a player in this year’s trade talks, but up until recently the Jazz were thought to be listeners not the aggressors. So what’s changed? Mo Williams got injured and is out indefinitely. Mo said himself that he fears the worst and that it reminds him of a prior injury where he had to get surgery. This is bad news for the Jazz even though they are 3-1 with Tinsley as the starter.
If Mo has to get surgery or the Jazz think he will be out for a couple months I highly doubt the Jazz will sit and wait. Two reasons for thinking this way; the first is the Jazz have shown they want to win now instead of waiting a couple years to be really good by playing Al and Sap over Favors and Kanter. Favors needs to be in 30+ minutes a game (imagine Dwight Howard sitting behind Kelvin Cato or Tony Battie). Young players learn more by experience on the court than by sitting behind a veteran for 3 years.
The second reason the Jazz could push a move is it gives Dennis Lindsey the reason he needs to make a trade without it completely being on his head. Think about it; if the trade doesn’t work out he can always say well we had to make a move because Mo went down. If the Jazz trade Sap or Al and the Jazz miss the playoffs fans might look back and say “well if we hadn’t of traded him (Sap or Al) we’d had made the playoffs.” Many fans want to see Burks play more point but they also realize that if we can get someone like Brandon Jennings the Jazz should do it immediately.
We’ll see what happens but if Mo is out for a while expect the Jazz to make a move sooner than later. Here is a list of Point Guards the Jazz could go
after: Brandon Jennings, Eric Bledsoe, Jimmer Fredette, D.J. Augustin, Jose Calderon, Luke Ridnour, Jrue Holliday, Darren Collison or Jeff Teague. With the assets the Jazz have not many are out of reach and other key pieces being brought in could help the Jazz have a playoff year and a brighter future.
