Well the trades messed up my mock draft a bit but I did correctly pick 13 of the 14 players in the Lottery, the only one I missed on was Markieff Morris, but I wasn’t the only one who didn’t see him going in the lottery. I nailed Kemba Walker at 9, but did not see Tristian Thompson going at 4 or Brandon Knight falling to 8. At least they weren’t Kawhi Leonard who fell all the way out of the lottery, also since the trade moved Jimmer to 10, technically I should get to move Burks up 1 spot meaning I went 2 for 2 on my Jazz picks.
Quick thoughts. I like both Jazz picks have a look at Kanter’s pre-draft measurments, compliments of Draft Express, you’ll notice he’s over 6’11 with less than 6% body fat. He has just below a 7ft 2 inch wingspan and just below a 9ft 2 inch standing reach. He also did 14 reps on the bench press which is solid for a guy with arms as long as his. Finally he had a 32.5 inch vertical leap. Most importantly he’s dying to play some ball and likes to bang, a very good quality
I mention this because Kanter compares very favorably to Dwight Howard’s measurements. Howard is actually an inch shorter than Kanter however he has Kanter beat by 3 inches in the wingspan, 2 inches in the standing reach, and 3 inches in the vertical leap. However Kanter doubled Howard’s bench press total.
My point is the Jazz just got a prospect who is very similar to Howard and that is a good thing, especially if Kanter has Howard’s work ethic because he’s already got a significantly better shot than Howard. Also check out Derrick Favors measurables, Favors is almost identical to Howard across the board with just a half inch less wingspan and an inch and a half less standing reach, but the same vertical leap. Favors also doubled Howard in the bench press.
The fact that the Jazz have 2 prospects like Howard makes me giddy. The fact that they are both just 19 years old and could develop into a dynamic duo is something few if any NBA teams have.
Next have a look at Alec Burks measurements, you’ll notice a 6 ft 6 shooting guard with a 6 ft 10 inch wingspan and a 36 inch vertical leap. Can you say athlete? Also check out David Locke’s draft breakdown of Burks. All of those so called experts who say Burks can’t shoot must not have watched many of his games. He has a fantastic pull-up jumper and great mid-range game, he may not be a great spot up 3 point shooter right now but give him time he too is just 19 years old.
With Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, Kanter, and Burks the Jazz have a solid young athletic core to build on. I think it was ‘Tank’ in the movie The Matrix who said to Neo “If you are the one it’s a very exciting time.” The same can be said for these Jazz prospects, if they are the ones it’s definitely a very exciting time!
Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait out an ugly labor dispute before we get to see these youngsters on the court. This is a new era for the Jazz and one I can’t wait to watch develop.
