Yes, beating the 3-40 New Jersey Nets is not something to crazy about, but a win in the NBA is always something to smile about. Even more so when it is a 33-point massacre, in which your team outscored its opponent in each and every quarter.
The Jazz came out against the Nets ready to kill, as they totally owned the first quarter in every aspect of the game. Utah shot a whopping 85% in the opening stanza, and they went on a 16-0 run during the quarter. The great thing about a run like that is that you know your team is playing hard on both ends of the court. Shooting lights out is one thing, but to get plenty of defensive stops in the process makes it that much more meaningful.
When the first quarter came to a close the Jazz led 34-21, and they never looked back from there. In fact, the Nets did not come within single digits for the remainder of the ‘contest’; if you even want to call it that.
Now granted, the Nets were without arguably their best player, Devin Harris, who had a sprained right wrist, but New Jersey just seemed to show a lack of heart throughout the game. The fact that the Nets could not even outscore Utah in the final quarter, just shows how terrible the Nets are playing right now, and how low their confidence must be. Believe me, April 14th (last day of their season) cannot come fast enough for the New Jersey Nets.
Getting back to the Jazz, Carlos Boozer led the way with 22 points while grabbing 9 rebounds. Paul Millsap and Mehmet Okur each had 20 points, and Okur added 11 rebounds for his 6th double-double of the season. Also, Ronnie Brewer had an extremely efficient game, as he shot 5-5 from the field and chipped in 15 points in 24 minutes. The surprise of the night was Deron Williams, who had a very quiet game. D-Will had just 4 points and 8 assists in just under 26 minutes of play. I guess if you can blow teams out by 33, and not have to waste a great performance, then by all means hold back.
The win puts the Utah Jazz at 25-18 on the season and in 6th place in the Western Conference. In their next game, the Jazz will be hosting the Phoenix Suns on Monday night.
